This superb display is accompanied by sixteen Afro Cuban artists spanning from the early 1800s to the present, and includes works by: Vicente Escobar (1757- 1834), María Ariza (1880- 1959), Emilio Rivero Merlín (1880- 1977), Ramon Loy (1894- 1986), Alberto Peña (1897-1938), Wifredo Lam (1902- 1982), Teodoro Ramos Blanco (1902- 1972), Roberto Diago Querol (1920- 1955), Guido Llinás (1923- 2005), Uver Solís (1923- 1974), Agustín Cárdenas (1927- 2001), Enrique Gay García (b. 1928), Angel Acosta León (1930- 1964), Haydee Scull (1931- 2007), Sahara Scull (1931- 2008), Nicolás Guillén Landrián (1938- 2003), Manuel Mendive (b. 1944), Tomás Esson (b. 1963), Juan Roberto Diago (b. 1971)

Mendive –one of the leading contemporary artists in Cuba and Latin America today– excels at crafting in his work a boundless union of the real and the oneiric, the magical and the ancestral. His artistic universe is permeated with a renovation of Afro Cuban mystical imagery and language that vindicates the infusion of love and spiritual thinking into everyday life.

"...Florido kindles our interest, suggests a story... he attributes symbolic accounts, experiences, stories of love or abandonment to fruits, roses or inanimate objects, thereby building an animistic universe in which each of his images is an extension of his own life and holds some unknown vital significance, something that can be confirmed by following the trail of his titles, which are messages, smoke signals, emotional tweets."

THE MOTHER, THE SON: TWO ARTISTS, ONE PASSION

Click above on exhibition title to visit the show, view the paintings, and read about the artist.

Intro:
Featuring the first bi-personal mother and son art exhibition in the U.S. of contemporary Cuban artists, Flora Fong and Li Domínguez Fong. The show will inaugurate at Cernuda Arte on First Friday, September 3, 2010 with an Opening Reception from 7 to 10 p.m.

Join us in welcoming Flora Fong and Li Domínguez Fong, who have traveled to the United States to attend the Opening Reception of their show.

Showing together and sharing walls for the first time in a dual presentation, this display includes over forty paintings rendered by both artists. Also featured in the exhibition are six exquisite one-of-a-kind bronze sculptures executed by Flora Fong that reflect the realm of the artist’s iconography.

Juxtaposing the work of Flora and Li, one can see how they create their own yin and yang renditions of luminosity and darkness, vivacity and stillness, clarity and blurriness… The mother and son relationship has sound foundations of unity, and harmony, yet, their artistic manifestos unfurl different paths and scenarios. Mother and son can never be confused with each other. While both share a common ancestry and a passion for art, their work reveals a marked contrast of styles and subject matters.

"As a faithful archetype of his generation, Sandro de la Rosa incorporated the aesthetic and formal techniques, which he later utilized to confront the representational inertia and worries generated by the conceptual impetus of the eighties and its social repercussions. If this assimilation was not a forced one for him, it was because he has always been -and continues to be- obsessed with artistic perfection, gifted with the pertinence and temperament necessary to be able to reach it, avid of knowledge and willing to delve into the enigmas or duplicities of art and its circumstances... Like the context he allegorizes, his paintings are replete with supposedly incongruous relationships, with evanescences that once internalized, grasped, revealed in their disguised packaging, begin to offer us the most perspicacious narrations."
