oil on canvas
12 1/2 x 19 1/2 inches

Cuban landscape artist Teódulo Jiménez (1879-1940) began his artistic development at the age of fourteen at San Alejandro Academy, where he received excellent marks for several years and earned a number of academic distinctions. The outstanding disciple of Valentín Sanz Carta carried on his instructor’s landscape style, to the extent that his works were often mistaken for his mentor’s originals. The likeness is visible in such paintings as Palmar en la Cañada, c. 1910, a rare example of a signed work by this enigmatic artist.
